Just like the millions watching on TV, Wilfried Sauerland could not believe his eyes. “Not in my wildest dreams would I have expected something like that,” the manager enthused following the Russian Giant´s shut-out victory over highly-rated ex-champ Sergey Liakhovich. “He finally showed what he is capable of doing. That was the best Valuev ever.” In a WBA eliminator in Nurnberg, the biggest and tallest champion of all time jabbed his way to a unanimous decision against a quality opponent. Valuev won every single round on all three scorecards (120-108, 120-108, 120-107). “I am very pleased with my performance,” he said. “I really wanted the rematch with Chagaev. I am looking forward to it.” Read the rest of this entry »

In a controlled early going Jermain Taylor found success with his jab in between the busier Kelly Pavlik’s attack. Taylor carried the speed advantage with him to 166 lbs but it was Pavlik with more consistent pressure and a rock solid approach. Pavlik fought nearly an identical fight to his first meeting with Taylor and although the knockout didn’t come, his game plan prevailed. He kept Taylor moving backwards and applied the type of smothering pressure that made it difficult for Taylor to mount a suitable offense. Read the rest of this entry »

What a fight! Fans saw straight up action from start to finish. Paul Williams was punished early by Carlos Quintana power shots before settling down and out boxing the determined Quintana during the middle rounds. Just when it appeared that Quintana may be fading, under the pressure of the long armed champion, he proceeded to pound left hooks into Williams’ brow. Quintana opened up cuts over both of Williams’ eyes and Quintana persistently targeted them.
Amazingly, and much to my surprise, the length and height of Paul Williams didn’t seem to bother Carlos Quintana in the least. He continued to work his way in and landed the vast majority of meaningful punches in the fight. At one point Williams corner attempted to encourage the listless fighter telling him “you can still win this”. But Quintana would not allow it.
The once highly touted contender was now a World Champion. Quintana has reemerged as a force in what is widely considered the deepest division in boxing. Now having toppled one of the divisions giants Quintana has taken a step toward erasing his only career loss, a devastating defeat to Miguel Cotto. My card read 115-113 for Carlos Quintana while the judges scored it 115-113 and 116-112(2) also for Quintana. The future again looks bright for the new WBO champion and more big fights await him.
By Phil Santos – Overhandright.com - Andre Berto continues to impress by stopping Michel Trabant. Trabant, who had never been stopped, quit on his stool following the conclusion of round six. The punctuation of Berto’s attack came in the 3rd round when Berto scored numerous vicious uppercuts. Read the rest of this entry »

No chance. Essentially that is what former Middleweight champion Jermain Taylor has been given in his rematch against current top dog Kelly Pavlik. Since besting future Hall of Famer Bernard Hopkins twice and fighting Winky Wright to a draw Taylor has seen his stock plummet. Fairly or not Taylor has faced plenty of criticism. He defended his crown against blown up Welterweights in Cory Spinks and Kassim Ouma and to make matters worse he was less than impressive in doing so. Read the rest of this entry »

When they first met Antonio Margarito was already an established champion with four title defenses on his résumé. Kermit Cintron was an undefeated up and comer with 23 knockouts in 24 fights as a pro. Although Margarito held an edge in experience and quality opponents faced it was Cintron who appeared to be the future. Five rounds and four knockdowns later Margarito had erased any doubt as to who the preeminent fighter was. Not only did Margarito drop Cintron four times, and add a serious blemish to his previously perfect record, but he cast a shadow of doubt over the future of the once prized prospect.
