What a fight! Fans saw straight up action from start to finish. Paul Williams was punished early by Carlos Quintana power shots before settling down and out boxing the determined Quintana during the middle rounds. Just when it appeared that Quintana may be fading, under the pressure of the long armed champion, he proceeded to pound left hooks into Williams’ brow. Quintana opened up cuts over both of Williams’ eyes and Quintana persistently targeted them.

Amazingly, and much to my surprise, the length and height of Paul Williams didn’t seem to bother Carlos Quintana in the least. He continued to work his way in and landed the vast majority of meaningful punches in the fight. At one point Williams corner attempted to encourage the listless fighter telling him “you can still win this”. But Quintana would not allow it.

The once highly touted contender was now a World Champion. Quintana has reemerged as a force in what is widely considered the deepest division in boxing. Now having toppled one of the divisions giants Quintana has taken a step toward erasing his only career loss, a devastating defeat to Miguel Cotto. My card read 115-113 for Carlos Quintana while the judges scored it 115-113 and 116-112(2) also for Quintana. The future again looks bright for the new WBO champion and more big fights await him.
